  16. <p>A gay Episcopal priest faces disciplinary action
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     It took two years of screening before New Jersey's
  19. controversial Bishop John Spong approved J. Robert Williams,
  20. 34, as the first Episcopal man to be ordained a priest while
  21. openly living in a gay relationship. It took six weeks for the
  22. bishop to decide the ordination was a big mistake. Williams has
  23. now been forced out of his job at a gay ministry while the
  24. diocese investigates whether he misrepresented his moral
  25. beliefs.

  27. <p>     Williams' downfall resulted from his remarks at a Detroit
  28. symposium on gay marriages: "Monogamy is as unnatural as
  29. celibacy. If people want to try, O.K., but the fact is, people
  30. are not monogamous. It is crazy to hold up this ideal and
  31. pretend it's what we're doing and we're not." Having thus
  32. dismissed the traditional concept of Christian marriage,
  33. Williams told a questioner in rather crude terms that Mother
  34. Teresa of Calcutta would be better off if she had had sex. All
  35. that was too much even for Bishop Spong, who also wants to
  36. overturn Judeo-Christian sexual limitations but encourages
  37. "committed" relationships, gay or straight, with lifelong
  38. monogamy as the ideal.

  40. <p>     Williams apologized for belittling Mother Teresa but stuck
  41. by his anti-monogamy stand. He plans to defy the bishop's
  42. request to cease all priestly activities until the case is
  43. settled. Says he: "If [Spong] wants to spend another
  44. quarter-million dollars, he can take me to trial." And speaking
  45. of trials, conservative Episcopalians are planning to file
  46. charges against Bishop Spong himself for ordaining an active
  47. gay.
